30 Day Photo Meme – Day 18

Day 18- Where you work/go to school

I work at home in a room directly before my bedroom. I press buttons and magnet for people and package up zines and books. Ideally it looks like this:

But mostly it is a mess. Last night, while I was finishing up some work, these three shelves fell on me spilling EVERYTHING onto me head and the floor.

There was actually more on the bottom shelf. I got really frustrated and stacked on the boxes on the floor. I’ll re-hang the brackets on another day.

Newsletter! L.A. Zine Fest! Chicago Zine Fest! ZOE!

Ack! hello neglected blog!

I recently put out a new newsletter. You can read it online here. It has info about some of my new button designs, upcoming travel plans, and discount codes for both my Etsy and Small World buttons shops. I believe there is still a day or two to purchase things and have them arrive in time for Giftmas.

Speaking of travel! I found super cheap tickets to LA and snagged a table at the LA Zine Fest! So, I’ll be in Southern California over Presidents weekend in February, just in time to get a reprieve from the damp and gloomy Portland winter. I’m hoping to have a new zine done by then. I’m inspired by 90s zines and hope to make a travel zines about my trip to the UK a few years ago. I’m not going to worry too much about pretty layout and am just going to put it all together after hammering it out on my typewriter. hooray for zines!

I also registered last night for a table at the Chicago Zine Fest. I had so much fun last year that I want to do it all again! I’m also organizing another ZOE (Zine Organizers Event) It is a physical space for zine event organizers to meet and share ideas and experiences about running zine events. We had one last year and it was really fun so I’m looking forward to doing it again.

And all this talk about Zine Events reminds me, we really really really need people to help us organize the Portland Zine Symposium. The last two organizing meetings have been pretty empty. A lot of the old organizers are burnt out and we need some new blood. We should be having an open meeting at the beginning of the year.

Office clean up! X-Files! Headed to utah next week!

My big project this past week has been to reorganize my office. I got rid of some huge metal shelves to realize I had a lot of space! I organized everything around the walls and attached some new shelves higher on the wall. I also ordered a new table to be my shipping table that isn’t here yet. I also haven’t put up all my post cards yet but here are some photos. It is all incredible efficient and it makes me want more work to do because packing order is easier and fun now that the space is all new. maybe order yourself a button or zine, ya?

Not the table that is going to stay there but having a shipping table in the middle of the room is great.

another view with lights! And with part of my lunchbox collection for ages ago.

view of my shipping supplies and part of my wall of postcards and my computer cubby.

New shelves and some postcards and boxes

My bike and a bit of my computer cubby. Note the bike tube nailed to the wall. I like to use clothes pins to hang stuff up there. I have some more posters to hang up still.

My office cubby under the stairs. Yes, I have a forehead scar and spend a lot of time in a small area understairs... I am not harry Potter.

shipping table and a look to the front door.

Check out my cool USPS mug. It says "management academy" on the other side. You will also see the postal rate chart from http://www.undergroundpress.com laminated with packaging tape.

paper cutter, zine supplies, bins of stuff and some herbs

I set up one of my typewriters so that i'll use it more. Let's hope it works!

While my bedroom looks less like it belongs to a teenage, my office can’t avoid that fate and I’m completely fine with that. I just hope I can keep it clean enough to not feel embarrassed when people come over to pick up buttons. Also, my computer has been sent away to take advantage of having everything fixed before the warranty runs out and I have been borrowing Paul’s computer. We have still been watching X-Files and have made it to Season 4 and have caught up to the point where we started watching it the first time we dated in Utah in 1997. It is sort of sweet when we are both like “Oh, ya I remember this airing right after Webly’s generator show birthday party where the police helicopter came.” or “I think we missed this one because we were on tour with Homesick.”

Speaking of Utah, I made vegan funeral potatoes the other night. Photos soon! Also, we are headed to Utah on Thursday. I hoping for a little snow but not too much., It has been several years since I have driven in snow and we have a rental car. So, Utah folks, what’s going on that is interesting next weeken

I don’t get bored…

Yup, It’s noon and I’m STILL in bed. In my defense I have been up since 7am but working. Yesterday I did the same thing. I worked on my Etsy Site where I have changed the photos and tried to edit the text for my custom button and magnet listings. Today I was doing the same thing to my Small World Buttons site. I also edited all 160 listings in my Etsy shop with the mode of shipping in the listing text. It has been a tedious, but necessary few days. The reason I subjected myself to such a mind numbing task was not just the necessity, I’m also just trying to figure out what to do with myself now that the busy season is winding down. I even started my taxes this week!

Basically, if you ever thought about ordering some custom buttons from me or maybe one of my many button designs with hearts on them for the silly upcoming holiday now would be the time. I’d be able to get buttons done and out to you in no time flat!

That’s not to say that I’m bored. I’m never bored because there is always SOMETHING to do. I spent all yesterday afternoon cleaning and rearranging my bedroom. The idea was that if I cleaned the first place I wake up in the morning then maybe I’ll spread the rest of the clean into other parts of the house. So far today that hasn’t worked out… I’m still in bed because I quite like sitting in this clean room.

but, I’ll have to get out of bed and on with my day. I have an IPRC shift and Zine Symposium meeting today. We may be deciding the date and place of the 2010 Portland Zine Symposium FINALLY! I’m excited to get this part done and move onto the next part of planning and also to start work on the autumnal zine tour!

For a little while longer though I’m going to lounge in my robe in my bed of clean sheets with glow in the dark constellations on them and my fake down duvet to keep me warm.

Stolen Sharpie Revolution package pictures.

So, UPS dropped off 1/4 of my 4,000 print run in 4 huge boxes. . The rest are still at the printer. They are printed but will be bound and trimmed when they get back from vacation. I’m leavning in 2 weeks anyway so I’ll wait until I get back to deal with them.

I got 1,000 copies and over 500 of them have been packed up and shipped out today, or they will be shipped out soon enough. I spent yesterday on the porch packing envelopes and then inside metering them and then Paul helped me with more this morning.

Here’s yesterday:

yup, a little under 100 packages!

Now that I have spent close to $400 in postage in the past two days Paul and I are going to ride downtown and drop off books at Powell’s and Reading Frenzy. I’m thinking of headed to Stumptown Comics fest to see if I can sell some books out of my bag this weekend. Every penny helps since I’m leaving in less than two weeks. ugh.

SO, buy my book won’t you? Here or here. If you order from my Small world buttons site and put “zines” as the promo code you will get 10% off!
