Hey there! It has been awhile since I had an update. I have spent the past few days working on redoing my kitchen. I have wanted to do this for awhile. I had bought a can of primer a few weeks ago and it sat there looking at me and taunting me. Finally I started priming over the old red and black. Sunday morning I walked down to the Miller Paint to find that it was closed so I rooted around in my basement and found almost a full gallon of “Hollyhock” green exterior pant like the outside of my house and thought I would see how it looked inside. It looked great!
I spent a few days painting and then wondered if I could take out the ill placed cabinets that make the kitchen feel strangled. They were way easier than I thought! There was basically a heavy duty hanger on the wall and a few screws that help to top on plus probably 60+ years of paint holding it together. Once I was able to lift those off it was easy! Bam! Two ugly cabinets gone! I thought about ripping the cabinets around the sink out too but they were made more sturdy. Paul suggested just taking the doors off and painting the inside. So I did. and it looks rad!
I then put in a bunch of wine and fruit boxes up a corner fo storage. After that i dragged paul to IKEA to get the side table I had been looking for over a year to replace the old cabinet type counter that I literally found in the trash when I first moved into this house in 2001. We also got some shelves and wall hangers to store stuff.
Years age when I was trying to sell this house Paul and I spent weeks working on it. We painted everything and refinished floors and fixed little things. Well, I posted this entry in my livejournal about this house’s transformation from punk house to cute cottage here. Below we will show how just over $250 changed the kitchen:

Circa 2003. Black and red with my sister's dog, Coda as the model.

The crappy kitchen floor that we ripped out.

The kitchen floor after we put new florring in. There is usually an ugly large boxy cabinet along the window to the left that was also painted red and black. It looks ok here and livable. This is how we lived in it for the past 2+ years.

First stages of painting and everything was a mess.

The view into the kitchen now

there are basically 3 doors into this tiny kitchen that is about 100 square feet

View of the left corner

The painted open cabinets

The kitchen windows with my new side table.

The IKEA side table that was the most expensive thing about this project.

The shelf I made for my clock and ipod player. It was made from left over pieces after I sawed down the shelf planks to fit the windows. I think it is so nice to cook and listen to music.

Corner cabinet made from Wine Boxes and fruit boxes. Being able to see all my ingredients really puts a new spin on cooking and I love it!
Sorry for the crappy camera phone pictures. I seem to have misplaced my card for my digital camera. I have no idea how i could have done that?
Anyway, I’m enamored with my new kitchen. I have just been hanging out in there because it feels so light and airy and calm. Also, my office is a disaster that needs a serious overhaul. I hope I’ll soon have the energy to do that! I’m really proud of my self at how easy and cheap it was to do. Hooray me!
woah alex, this looks great!
thanks!
alex it looks amazing!! i feel inspired just looking at it. the green and the white makes it look so airy and relaxing to cook in!
It is so nice cook in! I love it.
it’s so cute now.
You could paint the rest of the house the same colors inside!
I could paint the house the same colors inside and out and call it the Hollyhock house!
I love the shade of green and the wine boxes as shelving is a great idea!
